Which binoculars should I buy? The most important parameters of binoculars

The choice of binoculars should always depend on the purpose of the observation and the conditions under which we plan to conduct it. It is necessary to match the parameters of the binoculars that will provide us with the most comfortable and optimal observations. Certainly, it is always worth choosing models equipped with high-quality optical glass (equipped with anti-reflective coatings), which guarantees good light transmission, and therefore better quality images. Great image brightness and affordability are characterized, for example, by porro prism binoculars, but at the same time they are much larger in size than roof prism binoculars.

  • Magnification and lens diameter - the most important parameters that describe binoculars. For example, 10x42 binoculars magnify the image 10x, and the diameter of their objects is 42mm. The larger the diameter, the better the image quality, but at the same time the size of the device also grows. Magnification is an important parameter, but binoculars with the highest approximation will not be a good choice at all, as the image then becomes less stable. Much more important sometimes is the field of view, which is directly related to the magnification of a particular binocular.
  • Field of view - it is very strongly influenced by the eyepiece of the binoculars through which we make observations. With a larger field of view, it is easier for us to locate a given object, because we can cover a larger area of a given terrain with our eyes. However, the higher magnification a particular binocular offers, the smaller its field of view, and we have to determine for ourselves which of these parameters is more important for the purposes of our observation.

A large field of view will certainly be more important when we want to be able to easily find a given object in the open space, as well as view wide panoramas of cities, landscapes or events. However, if our goal is to observe a given object in more detail, it is then worth choosing binoculars with a stronger magnification.

Types of binoculars - what are the differences?

There are very different models of binoculars to choose from, which we can easily match to our needs. Military binoculars are advanced models that provide very good image quality and are often equipped with additional features, such as night vision. Hunting binoculars are usually characterized by medium size, which is a compromise between the capabilities of the binoculars and their weight and size.

Astronomical binoculars are the largest sized equipment with high magnification and brightness of image. Ornithological binoculars, on the other hand, are very small and lightweight so that you can easily track moving birds. If you are making observations of game, thermal binoculars are also very useful, which detect differences in temperature between a living object and its surroundings.
